Adyar Theosophical Academy is an upcoming educational institution nestled in one of the greenest areas of Chennai city. The site boasts an abundance of trees and vegetation, presenting a unique opportunity to create a school that embraces its natural surroundings. Our primary design objective for this project was to preserve as many trees as possible, as we recognized their importance in maintaining the site's ecological balance.
To achieve this, we meticulously mapped out a path that avoided any interference with the existing trees. This led us to develop a concept known as the "string" arrangement, where the classrooms are linearly arranged like a string. This layout allowed us the flexibility to adjust the positioning of the "string" in a way that harmoniously coexisted with the trees, ensuring their preservation.
Another significant design concept implemented at Adyar Theosophical Academy was the creation of mounds. The blocks of the school were strategically planned to be partially submerged into the ground, enabling vegetation to grow on them. This approach followed the principles of subterranean architecture, seamlessly integrating the structures with the natural environment. Earthy materials were carefully selected to blend with the surroundings, creating a sense of harmony and connection with nature.
The site also featured two existing ponds, which we made a conscious decision to retain. These ponds became focal points for gathering and group activities, serving as serene and contemplative spaces within the campus. The aim was to provide students with an immersive and enriching experience, akin to a camping adventure, allowing them to interact closely with the natural environment and develop a deep appreciation for the world around them.
In summary, Adyar Theosophical Academy embraces its lush and verdant setting in Chennai by preserving the existing trees and integrating the structures with the natural landscape. The innovative "string" concept and the use of subterranean architecture principles ensure the harmonious coexistence of the school with its surroundings. The retention of ponds as focal points enhances the overall experience for students, fostering a connection with nature and creating a unique learning environment. Adyar Theosophical Academy aims to provide an educational journey that immerses students in the wonders of the natural world, nurturing their curiosity and fostering a deep appreciation for the environment.
